Folio Box - old vs new comparison

UPDATE: While the relevant size changes remain the same, we have followed your feedback and re-implemented several portrait size options for the Folio Box. 13x18cm/5x7", 20x25cm/8x10" and 20x30cm/8x12" sizes have been brought back to the nShop!

On the 8th of February, 2023, we’re planning to release an important change in the production of our Folio Boxes - see what's going to happen below.

The Folio Box is one of the best selling products in our lineup. Effective in presentation, quick to design and above all else, practical, for just about any kind of photography.

It’s because of this popularity and the sheer number of orders it makes up, that we’ve been paying extra attention to it for some time - the design process, the options that a photographer can have & more. We’ve now come to the conclusion that things will need to be kept simple going forwards. For you and for us.

For the longest time, our Folio Box has featured a vast array of possible combinations - the paper options, print capacity, the sizes, finishes, pendrives and so on. We’ve recently taken a deep dive into the options that are actually being used & offered to your clients.

We’ve found that there is little difference between our portrait and landscape-oriented Folios, when it comes to their overall uses - which means that the vast amount of size options only contributed to further confusion among photographers new to our products. After all, if the image on a folio print can be rotated, the only remaining differences left would be the positioning of the lid & USB drive.

Due to this, as well as an upcoming nShop option in the very near future, allowing you to choose between portrait & landscape orientations when designing, we’ll be effectively halving our selection of size options for the Folio Box - in other words, instead of portrait & landscape orientations, there will be one, uniform landscape option.

This means that:

  • Folio Boxes will now always open from the smaller end, and the USB option will always be positioned from the right side.
  • Creating a portrait effect on Folios featuring a front cover will have to be done by rotating the image sideways before uploading.
  • Minor size adjustments have been made, to bring the product more in line with widely used imperial measurements - e.g. 10x10” is now as-stated without rounding down.
  • Due to these adjustments, you will only be able to copy projects from the new Folio Box going forward - copying projects made for the older size options will no longer be available.
  • The T11 Exclusive cutout window will no longer be available.

This is a summary of the new measurement changes made to our Folio prints:

And these are the new cutout window sizes (measured in mm) for each specific style:

Uh oh…

We have an idea of what you may already be thinking - they’re doing this to save on costs. While that could be a side-effect of this change, no cost analysis was used for the purpose of supporting it. Before you conclude this as just an ungrateful lab taking your options away… allow us to shed another light on this decision.

Generally speaking, our Folio Boxes share a similar production queue to our other packaging options - their contents aside, many of these options share materials, USB slots and sizes, all done to give you the best possible chance of finding a perfect product for you & your business.

This puts us in a fairly fortunate spot production-wise, where the design aspect of our packaging can be relatively uniform, and easy to scale for any potential products that may be released in the future. However, due to its rather large mixture of shapes and sizes, the Folio Box is an outlier.

We all know by now, that there has been a historical struggle for maintaining decent turnaround times come ordering season. By going through with this change, we are attempting to ensure that product orders are fulfilled as smoothly as possible in the future, thanks to the consolidated efforts from all those working on our packaging options - and therefore ensuring that the product can reach your client on time, as promised.

With all that said, the Folio Box functionally remains as the same product, albeit with a minor cover design & measurement difference, now slightly more akin to its Box for Prints counterpart.

We also advise you to order any existing Folio Box projects soon (by Feb 7th) as this update will cause all Folio Boxes currently waiting in carts to be deleted. Folio Boxes will also be temporarily disabled (Feb 8-9th) to facilitate this change.

So, just as a recap of what's going to happen:

  • The Folio Box will be temporarily disabled on the 8th and 9th of February, 2023.
  • On February 10th, updated Folio Boxes will become available.
  • We advise ordering any existing Folio Box projects in your cart by February 7th to avoid losing your work.

An upcoming promotion is also just a few weeks away, which will be a good opportunity to refresh your old Folio samples.

Naturally, we apologize for any inconvenience that such an abrupt change may cause, and we’re keen to hear your thoughts. Make sure to reach out to us through one of the options below to ensure that nothing is missed!
